Students Say
Being âpart of the law school is being part of a family for life,â says one student. âWe all feel welcomed into the Hawaii legal community from the first day of 1L orientation,â says one student. And one of the greatest strengths of the school is the way in which âstudents in each class support each other. As one student notes, âeven âgunnersâ are polite and helpful to others.â Unlike at so-called âcut-throat schools,â at Manoa, âaggressive behavior and sabotage are frowned upon and generally do not happen.â
The professors âare all well-versed in their fieldsâ and âactive practitioners and scholars.â Most teachers âare more than willing to speak with you,â and âhave open door policies,â although not all may not be willing to âengage in mentor-style relationships.â While some students rave about the faculty, others wish there were more âheavy hittersâ since students âneed strong recommenders when they come from lesser known institutions.â Given Manoaâs âgeographic location, however, [it has] some of the finest environmental law professors,â and âprestigious guest lecturers and speakers are prevalent because no one minds coming to Hawaii.â In courses for specialized fields, the âteacherto-student ratio is very favorable,â sometimes âless than 1:10.â The school has a âvibrant international LLM program, which allows law students from all over the globe to collaborate and exchange ideas.â There is a âheightened focus on ASEAN through the ASEAN Law Integration Center,â âChina, Japan, and Korea through [the] Pacific Asian Law and Society Certificate,â as well as the âPacific Asian Law and Society Organizationâ and the âAsia Pacific Law and Policy Journal.â Manoa also features ânumerous moot court teams,â and âthey all do extremely well on a national level (especially [the] Jessup team).â As a 2L notes, âIf you want to make changes in the world, this is the law school to come to.â
The âadministration is wonderfulâ and âsupportive of each studentâs success and career path.â Externships, internships, and jobs are ânumerous and relatively easy to procure.â Itâs extremely âeasy to get involvedâ and ânetworking is very important to the administration and students, so networking events are very common.â The âlarger legal community [of Hawaii] is actively involved with our education,â notes one student. And âlawyers and judges regularly provide guidance and opportunities for [Manoa] students.â
